Security Update for Travelers
What You Need to Know Before You Fly
by BookIt.com Staff
With the recent events taking place in the United Kingdom, The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is implementing a series of security measures, some visible and some not visible, to ensure the security of the traveling public and the nation's transportation system. The safety and security of our customers is of utmost importance to the staff of BookIt.com.
Please take some time to review these new security measures before departing for your destination. The TSA has updated their position on liquids and gels:The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it is adjusting its total ban on liquids, gels and aerosols effective Tuesday, September 26, 2006.
There are two significant changes: Travelers will be allowed to carry travel-size toiletries (3 ounce or less) that fit comfortably in ONE quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag through security checkpoints. Travelers may also bring items, including beverages, purchased in the secure, boarding area on-board the aircraft.“After the initial, total ban, we have learned enough from the UK investigation to say with confidence that small, travel size liquids are safe to bring through security checkpoints in limited numbers,” said Assistant Secretary for TSA Kip Hawley. “We have also taken additional security measures throughout the airport that make us comfortable allowing passengers to bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure area onboard.”It is unlikely that further adjustments to the ban on liquids, gels and aerosols will be made in the near future.
What You Need to Know
- Small amounts of required medicines are also accepted. This includes both prescription medicine that matches the passenger’s name, and up to 4oz of non-prescription medicines. Low blood sugar treatments including glucose gel are allowed. Be sure all medicines are clearly labeled.
- Passengers who normally carry on their luggage will be greatly affected. Keep in mind that toiletries such as creams and lotions (i.e. ointments, suntan lotion, topical creams), bug sprays, bubble bath, bubble bath balls (gel), eye drops/ gels, gel deodorants (solid stick is permitted), gel caps, hair styling gels, hair sprays (including aerosols), hair straightener or detangler, lip gels, liquid lip glosses (solid lip glosses and blushes are permitted), liquid foundations, liquid medications (up to 4 oz.of non-essential), liquid sanitizers, liquid soaps (bar soap is permitted), make up removers / facial cleansers, mascara, mouthwash, nail polish, nail polish removers, perfumes / colognes, saline solution and toothpaste are not permitted.
- Aerosol cans are not allowed.
Some solid or powdered cosmetics items are permitted past the checkpoint; however, this is left to the discretion of the Security Officer. To minimize delays and hassle, we recommend that you pack all cosmetics in your checked baggage. - At this time, according to the TSA and contrary to some media reports, electronics such laptops, cell phones, and music players are not banned.
- Anticipate that security screening will be slow, and the lines will be long, so make sure you allow plenty of time to pass through security. You should plan to arrive, at the bare minimum, two hours early and possibly even three hours if traveling in the next few weeks.
- Neatly arranged carry-on bags with see-through plastic or mesh organizers will make it easier for TSA inspectors and speed the security process.
- All passengers will be required to remove their shoes during screening and pass them through the scanners. You may wish to wear loafers or other shoes that are easily slipped on and off. If possible, avoid nylons or socks that are easily torn or soiled.
- When packing your checked luggage, bear in mind that luggage handlers are not as gentle as you are when you carry-on. Be sure that all liquids are in leak-proof containers.
- Be prepared to check your carry-on bag. Should the United States follow the U.K.'s lead and, even temporarily, ban carry-on luggage, be sure that your carry-on bag is sturdy enough to be checked. Until the new security policies are clearly enforced, you may wish to avoid traveling with valuables in case you are required to check them.
At this time, these measures are subject to change. They may be temporary or may be extended.

Oahu Travel Tips
Getting To and Around Oahu, Hawaii
by Jackie Fitzgerald
The beautiful island of Oahu boasts Honolulu as the largest and capital city of Hawaii. With the big city aura of Honolulu and sweet island innocence of the outer regions of Oahu, many visitors flock to the island to enjoy the best of both worlds. Though millions travel to the tiny island each year, getting to and around Oahu is a breeze.
Visitors fly into Oahu through Honolulu International Airport (HNL). The airport sits on the south shore of Oahu near Pearl Harbor, a few miles west of downtown Honolulu. Reasonable fares from the airport to downtown Honolulu, 24-hour service everyday of the week and friendly, helpful service provide convenience and affordability to travelers trying to quickly get on their way to a relaxing Oahu, Honolulu vacation. Uniformed airport attendants are at your service to flag down taxis and shuttles. Oahu's public transportation system, TheBus, picks up at the airport and costs just $2 for a one-way fare (however, pack light because only one carry-on that fits underneath your seat is allowed). Also, car rental vans wait at the airport to pick up customers and take them to off-site rental-car locations.
In fact, renting a car in Oahu and Honolulu is the preferred choice among travelers because it allows for flexible sightseeing; however, like any big city, driving in downtown Honolulu can be difficult during rush hour. You can avoid the gridlock by driving between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and after 6 p.m. Navigating around Oahu and Honolulu is also manageable. There are only a few roads that circle the perimeter of the island and a handful that cut across the island. On the other hand, taking driving directions from locals may be confusing because seldom will you hear the terms east, west, north and south; instead, islanders refer to directions as either makai (ma-kae), meaning toward the sea, or mauka (mow-kah), toward the mountains. In Honolulu, people use Diamond Head as a direction meaning to the east (in the direction of the world-famous crater called Diamond Head), and Ewa as a direction meaning to the west (toward the town called Ewa, on the other side of Pearl Harbor).
Though renting a car in Oahu or Honolulu is convenient, it is not necessary to get around, especially if you plan to limit your stay in the Honolulu area. You can take TheBus, cab or hop on the Aloha Tower Place Trolley. The trolley costs only $1 each way and can take you to all the fabulous restaurants, shopping and nightlife in downtown Honolulu. Affordable day passes are also available.
In addition to exploring all the attractions of Oahu and Honolulu, visitors can discover other Hawaiian islands like Big Island, Maui and Kauai by island-hopping with inter-island carriers such as Aloha Airlines and Island Air.
